Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We come before You with grateful hearts, praising You for Your holiness, goodness, and unfailing love. Thank You for giving us Your Word, which is truth and the perfect guide for our lives. As we study the Seventh Commandment today, open our hearts and minds to understand Your design for purity, faithfulness, and holiness. Search us, O Lord, and reveal any area where we need repentance and transformation. Help us not only to hear Your Word but to obey it by the power of Your Holy Spirit. May our love for You grow deeper, and may our lives bring honor and glory to Your name.

We commit this time into Your hands. In Jesus' name we pray.

Amen.

EXODUS 20

14 “You shall not commit adultery.”

God begins with a simple yet profound command. Adultery is anything that corrupts, spoils, or destroys the holy covenant of marriage that He designed. Marriage belongs to God, and therefore He alone defines its purpose and boundaries.

1. BE FAITHFUL IN MARRIAGE.

MATTHEW 19:4 And He answered and said, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.”

Jesus points us back to God's original design in creation. Marriage is a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman. Becoming "one flesh" is far more than a physical relationship; it is a complete union established by God Himself. Because God joins husband and wife together, no person has the authority to separate what He has united.

2 CORINTHIANS 11:2 For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I betrothed you to one husband, so that to Christ I might present you as a pure virgin.

Marriage also illustrates Christ's relationship with His church. Just as a husband and wife are called to exclusive faithfulness, believers are called to exclusive devotion to Christ. This picture reminds us that marriage reflects the gospel itself.

This is why a godly marriage is often described as a love triangle. As the husband and wife each draw closer to God individually, they naturally grow closer to one another. A healthy horizontal relationship is always strengthened by a healthy vertical relationship with God.

LEVITICUS 20:10 ‘If there is a man who commits adultery with another man’s wife, one who commits adultery with his friend’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

Because marriage is sacred, God treats adultery with utmost seriousness. Under Israel's civil law, adultery carried the highest penalty because it violated a covenant that reflected God's own covenant faithfulness. Although Christians are not under Israel's civil law today, this passage reveals how seriously God views sexual unfaithfulness.

HEBREWS 13:4 Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

Marriage must be honored, and the intimacy between husband and wife must remain pure. Sexual intimacy belongs exclusively within marriage. Those who reject God's design remain accountable before Him.

Scripture also exposes two dangerous attitudes that often lead people into adultery.

JOB 24:15 The eye of the adulterer waits for the twilight, Saying, ‘No eye will see me.’ And he disguises his face.

The first deception is believing, "No one will know." Sin always imagines secrecy, but nothing is hidden from God. Even when people never discover our actions, God sees everything.

PROVERBS 6:32 The one who commits adultery with a woman is lacking sense; He who would destroy himself does it. 33 Wounds and disgrace he will find, And his reproach will not be blotted out.

Adultery promises pleasure but produces self-destruction, shame, broken trust, and lasting consequences.

PROVERBS 30:20 This is the way of an adulterous woman: She eats and wipes her mouth, And says, “I have done no wrong.”

The second deception is rationalization. Instead of admitting sin, the heart justifies it. People excuse immorality because of loneliness, dissatisfaction, or personal happiness. Yet no human reasoning can redefine what God has declared to be sin.

2. BE FAITHFUL IN MIND AND HEART.

MATTHEW 5:27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’; 28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

The Seventh Commandment is not limited to physical acts. God judges the desires and intentions of the heart. Lust begins internally long before it becomes external behavior.

1 TIMOTHY 5:1 Do not sharply rebuke an older man, but rather appeal to him as a father, to the younger men as brothers, 2 the older women as mothers, and the younger women as sisters, in all purity.

Because purity begins in our thinking, believers must intentionally cultivate holy relationships. Paul teaches believers to view others through the lens of family rather than temptation. Respect and purity should characterize every relationship.

JOB 31:1 “I made a covenant with my eyes not to look with lust at a young woman.

Job demonstrates that purity begins with a deliberate decision. Long before temptation comes, we must determine that our eyes and hearts belong to God.

Jesus then uses powerful language to describe the seriousness of fighting sin.

MATTHEW 5:29 If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell.

Jesus is not commanding literal self-mutilation. Rather, He is teaching that we must remove anything that continually leads us into sin. Whatever draws us away from purity must be dealt with decisively.

GENESIS 39:9 There is no one greater in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this great evil and sin against God?10 As she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her to lie beside her or be with her. 11 Now it happened one day that he went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the household was there inside. 12 She caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” And he left his garment in her hand and fled, and went outside.

Joseph recognized that adultery was ultimately not just a sin against another person but against God Himself. His vertical relationship with God governed his horizontal relationships. Rather than flirting with temptation, he ran from it. The lesson is simple: don't flirt—flee.

2 CORINTHIANS 10:5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,

Victory also requires control of our thoughts. The battle for purity begins in the mind. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, believers can reject sinful thoughts and submit every desire to Christ's authority.

3. BE FAITHFUL TO OUR MASTER.

EXODUS 20:3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.

The Seventh Commandment ultimately points beyond marriage to our relationship with God. Every act of sin begins with misplaced worship. Idolatry is putting anything above God—including ourselves. Whenever our desires, pleasures, ambitions, or preferences become more important than obedience to God, we commit spiritual unfaithfulness.

EZKIEL 6:9 Then those of you who escape will remember Me among the nations to which they will be carried captive, how I have been hurt by their adulterous hearts which turned away from Me, and by their eyes which played the harlot after their idols; and they will loathe themselves in their own sight for the evils which they have committed, for all their abominations.

Israel's idolatry is described as adultery because they abandoned their covenant relationship with God. Physical adultery reflects a deeper spiritual problem: a heart that has wandered from its true Master.

MARK 8:38 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

Here, adultery symbolizes a world that continually rejects God. Every form of willful sin is evidence of spiritual unfaithfulness toward Him.

JAMES 4:4 You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

To love the world's sinful values is to become spiritually unfaithful. A divided heart cannot fully belong to both God and the world.

1 JOHN 2:15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.

John identifies the world's attractions—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—as competing loves that pull our hearts away from God.

REVELATION 2:4 But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.

The greatest danger is not merely committing sinful acts but slowly losing our love for Christ. Every compromise begins when our affection for Jesus grows cold.

2 TIMOTHY 2:13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.

Our greatest motivation for faithfulness is not fear alone but God's unwavering faithfulness toward us. Even when we fail, He remains perfectly faithful to His character and to His promises. His grace calls us to repentance, restores us when we return, and empowers us to live holy lives through His Spirit.

Closing Prayer

Our gracious Father,

Thank You for reminding us that You have called us to be faithful—not only in marriage but also in our thoughts, our hearts, and our relationship with You. Forgive us for the times we have allowed sinful desires, worldly distractions, or divided loyalties to pull us away from You. Create in us clean hearts and renew a steadfast spirit within us.

Help us to guard our eyes, our minds, and our hearts, and to flee from every form of temptation. Strengthen every marriage represented here, and teach us to honor the relationships You have entrusted to us. Above all, keep our love for Christ above every earthly desire. Thank You that even when we are faithless, You remain faithful. May Your faithfulness inspire us to live lives that are pure, holy, and pleasing in Your sight.

We give You all the praise, honor, and glory. In the precious name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, we pray.

Amen.
