GALATIANS 3:24 Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.

The Law reveals our need for Christ. The Law functions like a teacher leading us to Jesus. It exposes our inability to perfectly obey God's commands. None of us naturally keeps the Ninth Commandment because lying, deception, exaggeration, and gossip flow from our sinful nature. The Law shows that we fall short of God's standard and desperately need His forgiveness.

When we come to Christ by faith, He not only forgives our sins but also gives us a new heart and the power of the Holy Spirit to obey Him. Obedience is not the means of salvation; it is the evidence of a transformed life.

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your Word and for the gift of Your Law, which reveals Your holiness and our need for Jesus Christ. Open our hearts to Your truth. Help us to see where we have fallen short, receive Your forgiveness by faith, and rely on the Holy Spirit to transform our lives. Teach us to put away falsehood, speak the truth in love, and live in a way that honors You.

May Your Word change our hearts and make us more like Christ.

EXODUS 20

16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”

The Ten Commandments were never intended to save us; they were given to reveal our need for a Savior. The Ninth Commandment, "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor," exposes not only our speech but also the condition of our hearts. God is a God of truth, while Satan is the father of lies. Therefore, those who belong to Christ are called to reflect God's truthfulness in every area of life.

Originally, this command prohibited false testimony in court. In Israel's legal system, false witnesses could destroy an innocent person's reputation, property, or even life. The command protected justice, truth, and the dignity of every person.

However, the principle extends far beyond the courtroom. God forbids every form of dishonesty that damages another person's character or distorts the truth. The Ninth Commandment calls us to truthfulness.

MATTHEW 5:34 But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 But let your statement be, ‘Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’; anything beyond these is of evil.

During Jesus' day, many people believed they could make certain promises more believable by attaching oaths to them. Jesus corrected this thinking. Our honesty should not depend on invoking God's name because God hears every word we speak.

Followers of Christ should not need elaborate promises to prove they are telling the truth. Our character should make our words trustworthy. A simple "yes" or "no" should be enough because integrity has become our way of life. Jesus calls for complete integrity.

JAMES 5:12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment.

Christians should live with such consistency that people naturally trust what they say. Integrity is not demonstrated only in important moments but also in everyday conversations.

Christians should be known for trustworthiness. When our lives consistently reflect honesty, our testimony for Christ becomes credible.

EPHESIANS 4:15 …speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ... 25 Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another.

Truth alone is not enough; it must be spoken with love. Some people pride themselves on "telling it like it is," but truth spoken harshly can wound instead of heal. Others avoid difficult conversations in the name of love but fail to speak truth when it is needed.

Christlike maturity balances both. Speaking the truth in love requires wisdom, humility, compassion, the right timing, and the proper tone. Sometimes love requires speaking; sometimes it requires waiting for the right moment.

MATTHEW 12:36 But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Jesus teaches that every word matters because words reveal what is in the heart. The Ninth Commandment therefore includes much more than courtroom testimony. It addresses gossip, slander, deceit, exaggeration, and every careless word that harms another person.

Slander deliberately damages someone's reputation through falsehood. Gossip spreads information that need not be shared, whether true or false. Whispering behind another person's back often destroys relationships and weakens the unity of God's people.

Our tongue is the loudspeaker of our heart. If the heart is transformed by Christ, our speech should reflect that transformation.

Lying Grows Unless It Is Confessed

One lie rarely remains alone. A single deception often requires another lie to protect it, and eventually a person begins living behind layers of dishonesty. Over time, the greatest deception becomes self-deception, as the conscience grows dull and sin becomes easier to justify.

God calls us to confess our sins immediately rather than allowing lies to multiply.

PROVERBS 12:22 Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, But those who deal faithfully are His delight.

God does not merely dislike lying—He calls it an abomination because it opposes His very character. On the other hand, He delights in those who faithfully speak the truth. Truthfulness reflects the character of God.

Satan Is the Father of Lies

JOHN 8:44 You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Jesus identifies Satan as the origin of all lies. Lying is not merely a bad habit; it reflects the character of the enemy. The first temptation in history began with deception.

GENESIS 3:1 …has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?”... 4 The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! 5 For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

The serpent questioned God's Word, contradicted God's warning, and attacked God's goodness. Satan convinced Eve that God was withholding something good from her and could not be trusted.

This remains Satan's primary strategy today. Before people disobey God, they first begin doubting His Word and questioning His goodness.

ACTS 5:1 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, 2 and kept back some of the price for himself, with his wife’s full knowledge, and bringing a portion of it, he laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back some of the price of the land? 4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.” 5 And as he heard these words, Ananias fell down and breathed his last; and great fear came over all who heard of it. 7 Now there elapsed an interval of about three hours, and his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 And Peter responded to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for such and such a price?” And she said, “Yes, that was the price.” 9 Then Peter said to her, “Why is it that you have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out as well.” 10 And immediately she fell at his feet and breathed her last, and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.

The story of Ananias and Sapphira illustrates how seriously God views deception within His church. They were not judged because they withheld part of the money but because they pretended to be more generous than they really were. Peter made it clear that their lie was not merely against people—it was against the Holy Spirit.

Their story also demonstrates how sin spreads. One person's dishonesty influenced the entire family, and together they attempted to deceive God's people.

God desires sincerity rather than religious appearances.

God Is the God of Truth

HEBREWS 6:17 In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us.

Unlike Satan, who is the father of lies, God is perfectly truthful. Because He knows our weakness, He graciously confirmed His promises with an oath—not because His Word needs strengthening, but to give His people absolute assurance. God wants us to know that we belong to Him and that His purposes for us will never change.

It is impossible for God to lie. His character guarantees His promises. What God says, He will always do. Therefore, we can take refuge in Him with confidence, knowing that every promise He has made is certain and trustworthy. Our hope is not based on wishful thinking but on the unchanging character of the God who cannot lie.

TITUS 1:2 in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago

God cannot lie. Every promise He has made can be trusted completely.

PSALM 119:160 The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting.

The entirety of God's Word is truth and that His righteous judgments endure forever. Truth does not change because God does not change.

God's Warnings Lead Us to His Promises

REVELATION 21:8 But for the cowardly and unbelieving… and immoral persons… and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

This warning reminds us that lying is never a small matter. Yet Scripture never leaves us with warning alone. God also fills His Word with promises that encourage those who trust Him.

PSALM 34:10 The young lions do lack and suffer hunger; But they who seek the Lord shall not be in want of any good thing.

Those who seek the Lord will not lack any good thing. Satan says God withholds good; God promises that He graciously provides what is truly best.

ROMANS 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

This verse does not say that all things are good. Rather, it teaches that God, in His sovereignty, works through all things—even trials, suffering, and disappointments—to accomplish His good purposes. Nothing happens outside His control, and He is able to use every circumstance for the spiritual good of His people.

However, this promise is not universal. It is specifically given to those who love God and are called according to His purpose—those who belong to Jesus Christ by faith. Those who have trusted in Christ can rest in the certainty that God is working all things together for their ultimate good, shaping them to become more like Christ and accomplishing His perfect will in their lives.

HEBREW 10:23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful;

God encourages us to hold fast to hope because "He who promised is faithful." Biblical hope is not wishful thinking but confident assurance grounded in God's unchanging character.

Why Do We Lie?

At its root, lying is a theological problem before it is a behavioral problem. We lie because we fear rejection, failure, embarrassment, loss, or suffering. We often believe we must protect ourselves because we doubt that God will care for us.

But the more we know God's character, the less reason we have to deceive. When our confidence is transferred from ourselves to God, we become free to live honestly. We no longer need to manipulate the truth because we trust the God who never lies.

JOHN 14:6 Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

Truth is not merely a concept; truth is found in a Person. Jesus perfectly reveals the Father, perfectly fulfills God's Law, and perfectly keeps every promise of God. Those who come to Christ receive forgiveness, new life, and the power to walk in truth.

1 JOHN 5:10 The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning His Son. 11 And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

God Himself has testified concerning His Son. He declares that eternal life is found only in Jesus Christ. Whoever believes in the Son has life; whoever rejects the Son rejects God's own testimony.

This is the greatest truth we can ever believe. Because God cannot lie, we can have absolute assurance of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for reminding us that You are the God of truth and that Your Word never fails. Thank You for showing us through Your Law our need for Jesus Christ. Thank You that through Him we are forgiven, transformed, and empowered by the Holy Spirit to live lives that honor You.

Lord, help us to put away every form of falsehood. May our "yes" be yes and our "no" be no. Teach us to speak the truth in love, to walk in integrity, and to reflect the character of Christ in all that we say and do. When we are tempted to lie out of fear or pride, help us to trust in Your promises, knowing that You cannot lie and that You are always faithful.

May our lives point others to Jesus, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Use us to proclaim the truth of the gospel so that many may come to know Him as Lord and Savior.
