Honor God's Name

You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain

EXODUS 20:7

6/7/20157 min read

The book of Exodus is not merely the story of Israel’s deliverance from Egypt; it is a picture of humanity’s deliverance from bondage to sin and the ways of the world. In His perfect wisdom, timing, and grace, God delivers His people through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. After redeeming us, He does not leave us to wander aimlessly. He teaches us how to live lives of sanctification, devotion, and holiness—lives set apart for His glory.

The structure of the Ten Commandments itself reveals God’s priorities. The first four commandments deal with our vertical relationship with God, while the remaining commandments concern our horizontal relationship with others. Before we can rightly live with people, we must first rightly relate to God. This same order is affirmed by Jesus Himself when He declared that the greatest commandment is to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and the second is to love our neighbor as ourselves. Our relationship with people will never be healthy if our relationship with God is neglected.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for delivering us from the bondage of sin through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You that You do not leave us wandering, but teach us to live lives of holiness, devotion, and obedience for Your glory.

Lord, help us to love You first with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Draw us into a deeper relationship with You so that our lives and relationships with others may reflect Your love and truth.

Forgive us for the times we neglect our relationship with You. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit and help us walk as people set apart for Your name.

In Jesus’ name we pray,

Amen.

7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.

The Third Commandment teaches us to treat the name of God with reverence, honor, and holy fear. To take God’s name in vain is to use His name in a way that insults Him, misrepresents Him, trivializes Him, or empties His name of the honor He deserves. God’s name is not common or ordinary. His name reveals His character, His holiness, His authority, and His glory. Therefore, this commandment compels us to remember who God is and to remember all that He has done.

EXODUS

How We Break the Third Commandment

1. Cursing and Irreverent Speech

PSALM 83:18 That they may know that You alone, whose name is the Lord, Are the Most High over all the earth.

Many people break this commandment by using God’s name as a curse word or careless expression. God’s name belongs to the Most High over all the earth. His name is holy and set apart above every other name. Because His name reflects His majesty and supremacy, it should never be used casually, carelessly, or thoughtlessly. Expressions such as “OMG” may seem small to the world, but believers must recognize that God’s name deserves reverence rather than empty or frivolous speech.

2. Broken or False Vows

LEVITICUS 19:11 ‘You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another. 12 You shall not swear falsely by My name, so as to profane the name of your God; I am the Lord.

When people make promises or vows in God’s name without sincerity or faithfulness, they profane His name. This includes marriage vows, commitments to serve the Lord, or promises made before God. Often people begin with sincerity but later abandon their commitment. Worse still, some make vows they never intended to keep from the beginning. Because God’s name is attached to those promises, breaking them dishonors Him.

3. Empty Worship

MATTHEW 15:8 ‘This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me. 9 But in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’ ”

God is not honored merely by outward religious activity. Worship becomes empty when lips sing praises while the heart is distant from God. Since the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart, empty worship reveals a deeper spiritual problem within. God desires sincere worship that flows from genuine love and devotion, not mere religious performance.

4. Divine Name-Dropping.

DEUTERONOMY 18:20 But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.’

One of the gravest ways to misuse God’s name is to claim that God said something He never said. False teachers and careless believers alike dishonor God when they attach His authority to their own opinions, desires, or imaginations. Speaking falsely in God’s name misleads people and profanes His truth.

5. Idolatry.

EXODUS 32:4 He took this from their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool and made it into a molten calf; and they said, “This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.” 5 Now when Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the Lord.”

Idolatry is not merely bowing before physical statues. The most dangerous form of idolatry often exists in the mind. People may claim to worship the true God while reshaping Him into an image that suits their own preferences and desires. Israel called the golden calf “the LORD,” even while worshiping something completely false. Whenever we redefine God according to our imagination instead of His revealed Word, we take His name in vain.

6. Not Walking the Talk.

TITUS 1:16 They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed.

When believers are saved by grace through faith in Christ, they begin to bear God’s name before the world. Therefore, living in contradiction to God’s commands dishonors His name. A profession of faith without obedience is hypocrisy. People may claim to know God, yet their lives deny Him.

1 JOHN 2:4 The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;

True knowledge of God produces obedience. While believers are not saved by works, genuine faith results in transformed living.

LUKE 6:46 “Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?

Jesus confronts the inconsistency of honoring Him with words while rejecting His authority in practice. If we truly love Christ, we will seek to obey Him. To bear His name while living in rebellion is to misuse His name before the world.

The Consequences of Breaking the Third Commandment

2 SAMUEL 12:13 Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has taken away your sin; you shall not die. 14 However, because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also that is born to you shall surely die.”

Although God forgave David, David’s sin still brought consequences. His disobedience gave God’s enemies an opportunity to mock and blaspheme the Lord. When believers fail to walk faithfully, the reputation of God’s name suffers before a watching world.

2 TIMOTHY 4:9 Make every effort to come to me soon; 10 for Demas, having loved this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.

Demas once labored alongside Paul in ministry, yet later abandoned the faithfulness of discipleship because he loved the world more than Christ. When believers turn back to worldly desires, they dishonor the name they once professed to uphold.

PHILIPPIANS 4:2 I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to live in harmony in the Lord. 3 Indeed, true companion, I ask you also to help these women who have shared my struggle in the cause of the gospel, together with Clement also and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.

Euodia and Syntyche were faithful workers in the ministry, yet unresolved conflict between them became a public issue within the church. As God’s people bearing His name, believers are called to reconciliation, humility, and love. Jesus taught that the world would recognize His disciples by their love for one another. Division and unforgiveness misrepresent His character.

How We Obey the Third Commandment

PSALMS 29:1 Ascribe to the Lord, O sons of the mighty, Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due to His name; Worship the Lord in holy array.

Obeying the Third Commandment begins with giving God the glory due His name. Reverence for God grows as the Holy Spirit teaches us to worship Him rightly. We must learn to approach God with awe, gratitude, humility, and worship.

PHILIPPIANS 2:9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The name of Jesus is exalted above every name. One day every knee will bow before Him and every tongue will confess that He is Lord. Therefore, believers should honor His name now with willing worship, loving obedience, and holy living.

MATTHEW 6:9 “Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

Jesus taught His disciples to begin prayer with reverence for God’s name. The word “hallowed” means holy, honored, and set apart. Our greatest motivation for honoring God’s name is that He is our Father. We do not merely fear Him as Judge; we love Him as children who desire to honor their Father.

COLOSSIANS 3:17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

The Christian life is meant to reflect the honor of Christ in every area. Every word, action, attitude, and relationship should be lived in a manner worthy of His name. The Third Commandment ultimately calls believers not merely to avoid profanity, but to live lives that exalt the holiness, truth, beauty, and glory of God’s name before the world.

Help us to love You with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and teach us to honor You in the way we speak, think, and live. Strengthen our relationship with You so that our relationships with others may also reflect Your grace and love.

May Your Word remain in our hearts and continue to transform us each day. Guide us by Your Holy Spirit and help us walk in obedience to You.

We commit ourselves to You now and give You all the glory.
