Heavenly Father,

Thank You for calling us to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Fill us with the character of Christ so that our lives will reflect Your love, truth, and grace. Give us compassion to lead others to You, humility to trust Your Word, and faith to walk in obedience.

Use our lives, no matter how ordinary, to make an eternal difference. May everything we do bring glory to Your name.

In Jesus' name we pray.

Jesus did not call His followers merely to believe the truth; He called them to influence the world by reflecting His character. The world is decaying because of sin and is darkened by spiritual blindness, but God has placed His people in the world as salt to preserve and as light to illuminate. The story of Naaman in 2 Kings 5 demonstrates how God uses ordinary people, humbling circumstances, and His amazing grace to transform lives and enable believers to make an eternal difference.

I. We Are Called to Influence the World

MATTHEW 5:13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.

First, salt preserves. In the ancient world, salt slowed the decay of meat. Spiritually, Christians are God's instrument to restrain moral and spiritual corruption in society. If society continues to decay, Jesus does not tell us to blame the world. The world behaves according to its fallen nature. Instead, we must ask whether the salt has lost its influence. Salt is useless if it remains in the container. It must come into contact with what it is meant to preserve.

Second, salt seasons. Salt enhances flavor. Christians should make life better wherever God places them by displaying Christlike character, kindness, integrity, compassion, and truth.

MATTHEW 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.

Darkness is the absence of light. Instead of merely complaining about the darkness around us, we should ask where God's light is shining. God intends His people to illuminate a world blinded by sin.

Light exposes error, reveals truth, provides direction, and offers hope. Like a lamp placed on a stand, believers should not hide their faith but allow God's truth to be seen through their lives.

MATTHEW 5:16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Jesus commands us to live intentionally.

Our good works are never meant to draw attention to ourselves. Rather, they should point people to God. Christian influence is not about building our reputation but about bringing glory to our heavenly Father.

One transformed life can influence countless others.

Edward Kimball faithfully shared the gospel with a young shoe salesman named Dwight L. Moody. Moody influenced Wilbur Chapman. Chapman influenced Billy Sunday. Billy Sunday influenced Mordecai Ham. Mordecai Ham led Billy Graham to Christ. Billy Graham eventually preached the gospel to billions of people around the world.

Likewise, the faithful influence of Susanna Wesley shaped her son John Wesley, whose ministry transformed England, inspired John Newton, influenced William Wilberforce, and contributed to the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire.

History reminds us that God often changes the world through ordinary people who faithfully influence one life at a time.

II. God Uses Ordinary People to Make an Extraordinary Difference

2 KINGS 5:1 Now Naaman, captain of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man with his master, and highly respected, because by him the Lord had given victory to Aram. The man was also a valiant warrior, but he was a leper.

Naaman appeared to have everything. He was successful; he was respected; he was powerful; he was victorious. Yet Scripture ends the description with four sobering words: "But he was a leper."

His physical disease exposed a deeper spiritual reality. Every person has a problem that success cannot solve.

2 KINGS 5:2 Now the Arameans had gone out in bands and had taken captive a little girl from the land of Israel; and she waited on Naaman’s wife. 3 She said to her mistress, “I wish that my master were with the prophet who is in Samaria! Then he would cure him of his leprosy.”

The unnamed servant girl had every reason to hate Naaman. She had been kidnapped; separated from her family; forced into slavery. Yet instead of seeking revenge, she showed compassion. She desired her master's healing.

Here we see that making a difference begins with compassion that flows from forgiveness.

She was only a servant; she was unnamed; she had no influence politically. Yet God used her simple testimony to begin Naaman's journey toward salvation.

2 KINGS 5:4 Naaman went in and told his master, saying, “Thus and thus spoke the girl who is from the land of Israel.” 5 Then the king of Aram said, “Go now, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel.” He departed and took with him ten talents of silver and six thousand shekels of gold and ten changes of clothes.

Naaman believed the servant girl's testimony because her words were backed by the credibility of her life. Her faithfulness, even in suffering, gave weight to her witness. People are more likely to believe our message when they see Christ reflected in our character.

Her testimony moved Naaman to act. He recognized that neither his power, wealth, nor position could cure his leprosy. Although he still thought God's blessing could be obtained through gifts, he had not yet learned that God's grace cannot be bought—it is received by humble faith. His journey of transformation began because one faithful servant girl chose to make a difference.

1 PETER 3:18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God…

Jesus accomplished what no religion, morality, or human effort could accomplish. He died once for all. The innocent took the place of the guilty.

Through His sacrifice, sinners can be brought back to God. This is the heart of biblical Christianity.

III. Pride Is Humanity's Greatest Obstacle

2 KINGS 5:9 So Naaman came with his horses and his chariots and stood at the doorway of the house of Elisha. 10 Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, “Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh will be restored to you and you will be clean.” 11 But Naaman was furious and went away and said, “Behold, I thought, ‘He will surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, and wave his hand over the place and cure the leper.’ 12 Are not Abanah and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean?” So he turned and went away in a rage.

Naaman obeyed enough to travel to Israel, but his heart remained proud. He expected special treatment. Instead, Elisha simply sent a messenger instructing him to go and wash in the Jordan seven times. Naaman became furious.

He expected dramatic ceremonies; he preferred better rivers; he trusted his own ideas over God's instructions. His greatest disease was no longer leprosy. It was pride.

God was not merely interested in healing Naaman's body. God wanted to transform his heart.

PROVERBS 14:12 There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.

Human reasoning often opposes God's wisdom. Many sincerely believe they are right, but sincerity alone does not save. Humility is necessary to receive God's grace.

2 CORINTHIANS 4:4 in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

Satan blinds people to the truth of the gospel. This explains why many intelligent and sincere people reject Christ. They do not merely lack information. They need spiritual sight.

The gospel literally means "good news." The good news is not what we do for God but what God has done for us through Jesus Christ.

ROMANS 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Every human being has sinned. Our greatest problem is not physical sickness but separation from God because of sin.

ROMANS 6:23 For the wages of sin is death...

Sin earns death—not merely physical death but eternal separation from God.

REVELATION 21:8 But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

The Bible teaches that death is more than physical. Beyond physical death is the second death—eternal separation from God in the lake of fire. This is the ultimate consequence of sin for those who reject God's offer of salvation through Jesus Christ. It is a sober reminder that our greatest need is not merely physical healing, but spiritual reconciliation with God.

REVELATION 20:12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds... 14 …This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

The Bible teaches that everyone will one day stand before God and be judged. Those whose names are not written in the Book of Life will face the second death—eternal separation from God.

If our spiritual eyes are blind, we may ignore this truth. But if the Bible is true and Jesus is who He claimed to be, then the most important question is: Where will you spend eternity?

Many trust in good works, religion, or morality to save them, but none can remove sin. Salvation is found only through Jesus Christ, who reached down to us by His grace.

IV. Saving Faith Produces a Changed Life

2 KINGS 5:13 Then his servants came near and spoke to him and said, “My father, had the prophet told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more then, when he says to you, ‘Wash, and be clean’?” 14 So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child and he was clean.

The problem was not that God's command was difficult. The problem was that it was too simple. Pride always wants to earn salvation. Grace simply asks us to trust.

Naaman humbled himself; he washed seven times. God restored him completely. His healing became a picture of spiritual cleansing.

2 KINGS 5:15 When he returned to the man of God with all his company, and came and stood before him, he said, “Behold now, I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel; so please take a present from your servant now.” 16 But he said, “As the Lord lives, before whom I stand, I will take nothing.” And he urged him to take it, but he refused.

Naaman returned with a new confession. The proud pagan general became a worshiper of the true God.

He attempted to pay Elisha. Elisha refused. Salvation cannot be purchased.

EPHESIANS 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Salvation is entirely God's gift. It cannot be earned; it cannot be bought. It can only be received by faith.

ACTS 16:30 … “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

To be saved, believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Trust completely in what He accomplished through His death and resurrection.

2 KINGS 5:17 Naaman said, “If not, please let your servant at least be given two mules’ load of earth; for your servant will no longer offer burnt offering nor will he sacrifice to other gods, but to the Lord.

Saving faith always changes a person's worship, priorities, and direction. Transformation is the evidence of genuine faith.

V. The Gospel Calls for a Personal Response

ROMANS 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

God offers eternal life as a free gift. A gift must be personally received.

ROMANS 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;

Faith is not merely intellectual agreement. It is trusting Christ completely, surrendering to His Lordship, and publicly identifying with Him.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for reminding us that You have called us to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Forgive us when we fail to reflect Christ in our lives. Transform our hearts and help us live with compassion, humility, and faithfulness.

Like the servant girl who made a difference in Naaman’s life, use us as Your instruments to bring hope and point others to Your saving grace. Help us to trust Your Word, depend on Your grace, and allow our lives to shine for Your glory.

May our words, actions, and testimonies lead others closer to Jesus. Use us to make an eternal difference wherever You place us.
