Obey God's Command
But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.

Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We come before You with grateful hearts, thanking You for Your love, grace, and faithfulness. As we study Your Word today, we ask that You open our minds to understand and our hearts to receive Your truth. Teach us to trust You and obey Your commands even when the path is difficult or unclear.
Help us not to be merely hearers of Your Word, but doers who faithfully follow Your will. Remove every doubt, fear, and distraction that may hinder our obedience. May Your Holy Spirit guide our discussion and help us apply Your lessons to our daily lives.
We desire to know You more deeply and to walk in a manner that pleases You. May everything we learn today bring glory and honor to Your name.
In Jesus' name we pray,
Amen.
EXODUS 4
15 You are to speak to him and put the words in his mouth; and I, even I, will be with your mouth and his mouth, and I will teach you what you are to do.
Despite Moses' repeated excuses, God did not abandon His calling. Instead, He graciously provided Aaron as a helper and assured Moses of His continual presence. The issue was never Moses' ability but God's sufficiency. God was teaching Moses that divine assignments are accomplished not through human confidence but through dependence upon Him. The Lord would supply both the message and the wisdom needed for the task.
JOSHUA 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.
True success is not determined by wealth, position, or personal achievement but by living according to God's will. God promised prosperity and success to Joshua, but these blessings were connected to meditation on and obedience to His Word. A life directed by Scripture develops godly character, wise decisions, and spiritual fruitfulness. God's blessings are experienced most fully when His people walk in obedience.
JAMES 1:22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. 25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.
Knowledge of God's truth alone does not transform a person. Transformation occurs when truth is acted upon. James warns that hearing God's Word without obeying it creates spiritual self-deception. Genuine faith expresses itself through obedience. As believers consistently apply God's truth, they experience the freedom, joy, and blessing that come from living according to His design.
EXODUS 4:18 Then Moses departed and returned to Jethro his father-in-law and said to him, “Please, let me go, that I may return to my brethren who are in Egypt, and see if they are still alive.” And Jethro said to Moses, “Go in peace.” 19 Now the Lord said to Moses in Midian, “Go back to Egypt, for all the men who were seeking your life are dead.” 20 So Moses took his wife and his sons and mounted them on a donkey, and returned to the land of Egypt. Moses also took the staff of God in his hand...
After encountering God, Moses responded with immediate action. The man who had previously hesitated now began moving in obedience. Before confronting Pharaoh, Moses first demonstrated submission within his own household by respectfully seeking Jethro's blessing. Obedience often begins in ordinary responsibilities before God entrusts us with greater assignments. Moses' departure from Midian marked the beginning of a life increasingly shaped by trust in God's direction.
EXODUS 4:24 Now it came about at the lodging place on the way that the Lord met him and sought to put him to death. 25 Then Zipporah took a flint and cut off her son’s foreskin and threw it at Moses’ feet, and she said, “You are indeed a bridegroom of blood to me.” 26 So He let him alone. At that time she said, “You are a bridegroom of blood”—because of the circumcision.
This startling event reveals how seriously God regards obedience. Moses had been chosen to represent God's covenant before Israel, yet he had neglected an important covenant responsibility within his own family. Before God could use him publicly, Moses had to address private disobedience. God desires integrity in His servants; He will not allow leaders to call others to obedience while disregarding His commands themselves.
GENESIS 17:7 I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you. 10 This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised. 11 And you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and you. 12 And every male among you who is eight days old shall be circumcised throughout your generations…
Circumcision served as the outward sign that God's people belonged to Him and were set apart for His purposes. It reminded each generation of God's covenant promises and their responsibility to walk faithfully before Him. The physical sign pointed to a deeper spiritual reality: a life surrendered to God and committed to covenant relationship with Him.
DEUTERONOMY 30:6 “Moreover the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, so that you may live.
God's ultimate concern is not external rituals but inward transformation. Physical circumcision could identify a person as part of the covenant community, but only a changed heart could produce genuine love and devotion to God. Moses later taught that true obedience flows from a heart renewed by God's work. The outward sign was meaningful only when accompanied by inward surrender.
EXODUS 5
1 And afterward Moses and Aaron came and said to Pharaoh, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Let My people go that they may celebrate a feast to Me in the wilderness.’ ” 2 But Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and besides, I will not let Israel go.”
Pharaoh's refusal exposed the real issue behind his resistance: he did not know God. His rejection was not merely political; it was spiritual. People naturally resist God's authority when they do not recognize who He is. The Exodus would become God's demonstration of His power and glory, revealing to Pharaoh, Israel, and the nations that He alone is the true Lord.
EXODUS 5:17 But he said, “You are lazy, very lazy; therefore you say, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.’18 So go now and work; for you will be given no straw, yet you must deliver the quota of bricks.”... 20 When they left Pharaoh’s presence, they met Moses and Aaron as they were waiting for them. 21They said to them, “May the Lord look upon you and judge you, for you have made us odious in Pharaoh’s sight and in the sight of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us.” 22 Then Moses returned to the Lord and said, “O Lord, why have You brought harm to this people? Why did You ever send me? 23 Ever since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done harm to this people, and You have not delivered Your people at all.”
Moses expected obedience to God to produce immediate results, but instead conditions became worse. Pharaoh increased the burdens of the Israelites, and the people turned against Moses. Yet Moses did the right thing by bringing his confusion and disappointment directly to God. Faith does not deny difficulties; it brings them honestly before the Lord. Obedience often leads through seasons of testing before God's promises are fulfilled.
HEBREWS 10:36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.
Doing God's will requires perseverance. Obedience is not measured merely by a good beginning but by faithful endurance through challenges, delays, and opposition. God's promises are often realized after a period of waiting, during which He develops patience, maturity, and steadfast faith in His people.
CHAPTER 6
1 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for under compulsion he will let them go, and under compulsion he will drive them out of his land.”
Only after Moses obeyed and endured disappointment did God reveal the next stage of His plan. There are aspects of God's power and faithfulness that can be understood only through experience. As believers continue to trust and obey, they witness God's intervention in ways they could never have anticipated.
ROMANS 9:17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I raised you up, to demonstrate My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed throughout the whole earth.”
God used even Pharaoh's resistance to magnify His glory. What appeared to be an obstacle became the stage upon which God's power was displayed. Through the Exodus, God's name became known far beyond Egypt. This passage reminds us that God remains sovereign over both favorable and unfavorable circumstances, using all things to accomplish His redemptive purposes.
ACTS 22:8 …‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said to me, ‘I am Jesus… 10 …What shall I do, Lord?’…
Paul's conversion illustrates an important principle: obedience grows out of relationship. Before meeting Christ, Paul opposed God's purposes. After encountering Jesus, his first response was surrender. Genuine obedience is not merely compliance with rules; it is the natural response of a heart that knows and trusts the Lord.
EXODUS 3:19 But I know that the king of Egypt will not permit you to go, except under compulsion.
God's calling of Moses was never based on uncertainty about the outcome. Before Moses even arrived in Egypt, God already knew the opposition he would face. This reminds believers that difficulties never catch God by surprise. The obstacles encountered in obedience are often part of God's larger plan for displaying His power and accomplishing His purposes.
EXODUS 4:21 The Lord said to Moses, “When you go back to Egypt see that you perform before Pharaoh all the wonders which I have put in your power; but I will harden his heart so that he will not let the people go.
Pharaoh's hardening heart demonstrates the danger of persistent resistance to God. Every act of rebellion reinforced his unwillingness to submit. God's judgment included allowing Pharaoh to continue in the path he had chosen, revealing the consequences of rejecting divine truth. A heart that repeatedly says no to God becomes increasingly resistant to His voice.
HEBREWS 3:13 But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
Sin gradually hardens the heart by making disobedience seem acceptable. What begins as a small compromise can develop into habitual rebellion. God therefore places believers within a community where they can encourage one another toward faithfulness. Regular encouragement helps guard against the subtle deception of sin.
PHILIPPIANS 2:13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
Obedience is ultimately a work of God's grace. Left to ourselves, we naturally resist His will. Yet God works within His people, giving both the desire and the ability to do what pleases Him. Every act of genuine obedience is evidence of God's transforming power operating in the believer's life.
ROMANS 9:15 For He says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”
God's mercy is never earned or deserved. His grace flows from His sovereign love and compassion. Moses' life itself was a testimony to divine mercy—from his preservation as a child to his calling as Israel's deliverer. Recognizing God's grace produces humility, gratitude, and deeper dependence upon Him.
Closing Prayer
Gracious Father,
Thank You for speaking to us through Your Word. We are reminded that obedience is not always easy, but it is always the best path because it leads us closer to You. Thank You for the assurance that Your grace enables us to do Your will.
Help us to obey You promptly, trust You completely, and persevere through every challenge we face. Guard our hearts from the deceitfulness of sin and keep us sensitive to Your voice. May we live each day with the conviction that Your commands are for our good and Your purposes are perfect.
Strengthen us to put into practice what we have learned. May our lives reflect our love for You, and may others see Your power and faithfulness through our obedience.
We give You all the praise, honor, and glory.
In the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,
Amen.
