Rest in God's Guidance
Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him
PSALM 37:7
4/12/20159 min read
God calls His people to rest in Him, trust His timing, follow His guidance, obey in faith, and watch Him work. His ways may not always make sense, and His timing may seem slow, but He is always faithful to His promises. The God who delivered Israel from Egypt, guided them through the wilderness, and parted the Red Sea is the same God who leads His people today through His Spirit and His Word. As we trust and obey Him, our lives become a testimony that points others to the one true God.
Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We come before You with grateful hearts, praising You for Your faithfulness and unfailing love. Thank You for gathering us together to study Your Word. As we look at the journey of Israel from Egypt to the Promised Land, help us see Your heart and learn to trust You more.
Lord, teach us to rest in You and wait patiently for Your perfect timing. Forgive us for the times we have been anxious, fearful, and impatient. Help us to trust Your guidance even when we do not understand the path before us. Open our minds to understand Your Word and soften our hearts to obey what You teach us today.
May Your Holy Spirit guide our discussion, strengthen our faith, and remind us that You are always with us. Help us to focus on You rather than our problems and to walk by faith, knowing that You are working all things according to Your good purpose.
We commit this time to You and ask that You be honored in everything we do.
In Jesus' name we pray,
Amen.
1. Resting in God's Timing.
PSALM 37:7 Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.
The journey begins with a call to rest. Biblical rest is not inactivity; it is trusting God enough to wait for His timing. Many people fret because they compare themselves with those who seem to prosper through ungodly means. Anxiety often comes from believing we must take matters into our own hands. God calls His people to stop striving and trust that He is in control.
1 PETER 4:19 Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.
Trusting God does not mean life will be free from hardship. Sometimes suffering comes precisely because we are obeying Him. Yet believers can entrust themselves to God because He is faithful.
2. God Fulfills His Promises.
EXODUS 12
35 Now the sons of Israel had done according to the word of Moses, for they had requested from the Egyptians articles of silver and articles of gold, and clothing; 36 and the Lord had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have their request… 37 Now the sons of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, aside from children. 38 A mixed multitude also went up with them, along with flocks and herds, a very large number of livestock...
After generations of slavery, God delivered Israel exactly as He promised. The Israelites did not manipulate the Egyptians or seize wealth by force. They simply obeyed God's instructions, and God gave them favor. Even some Egyptians joined them because they had witnessed the power of the true God.
This reminds us that God can provide through unexpected people and circumstances. We do not need to force outcomes; we need to trust His provision.
40 Now the time that the sons of Israel lived in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years. 41 And at the end of four hundred and thirty years, to the very day, all the hosts of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt. 42 It is a night to be observed for the Lord for having brought them out from the land of Egypt; this night is for the Lord, to be observed by all the sons of Israel throughout their generations.
Israel left Egypt after 430 years, "to the very day." God's promises may seem delayed, but they are never forgotten. His timing is always perfect.
GENESIS 15:13 God said to Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years... 16 Then in the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete.”
Centuries earlier, God had already revealed this timeline to Abraham. He knew Israel would be enslaved and later delivered. He also delayed Israel's conquest of Canaan because He was giving the Amorites time to repent.
Nothing catches God by surprise. His plans are unfolding even when we cannot see them.
3. Trusting God's Guidance.
EXODUS 13
17 Now when Pharaoh had let the people go, God did not lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, even though it was near; for God said, “The people might change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.” 18 Hence God led the people around by the way of the wilderness to the Red Sea; and the sons of Israel went up in martial array from the land of Egypt. 19 Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for he had made the sons of Israel solemnly swear, saying, “God will surely take care of you, and you shall carry my bones from here with you.”
When Israel left Egypt, God did not lead them by the shortest route. He knew they were not ready for war and might return to slavery. Therefore, He led them through the wilderness.
Often God's direction does not seem logical. We want the shortcut, but God is more concerned with our welfare than our convenience. The longer path is sometimes the safer path.
Joseph's bones also accompanied the people. Before his death, Joseph believed God would bring Israel into the Promised Land. Carrying his bones was a reminder that God keeps His promises across generations. The focus is not the faithfulness of Joseph or Moses, but the faithfulness of God.
4. God's Presence Never Leaves His People
EXODUS 13:21 The Lord was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. 22 He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.
God guided Israel through a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. The cloud provided shade from the desert heat; the fire provided light and warmth in the darkness.
After salvation, God does not abandon His people. He remains with them throughout their journey.
ROMANS 8:14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
Today God guides believers through the Holy Spirit. Those who belong to Him are led by His Spirit.
PSALM 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
God's guidance comes through both His Spirit and His Word. The Spirit of God never contradicts the Word of God. Therefore, believers must learn to pray, listen, and meditate on Scripture.
5. When God's Guidance Does Not Make Sense.
EXODUS 14
1 Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Tell the sons of Israel to turn back and camp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea; you shall camp in front of Baal-zephon, opposite it, by the sea. 3 For Pharaoh will say of the sons of Israel, ‘They are wandering aimlessly in the land; the wilderness has shut them in.’
God instructed Israel to camp near the sea, placing them in what appeared to be a vulnerable position. To human reasoning, this seemed foolish.
Sometimes God leads us into situations that do not make sense. His ways are higher than ours.
PROVERBS 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.
When circumstances are confusing, believers must trust the Lord rather than rely on their own understanding. God's wisdom exceeds human wisdom.
6. God's Purpose Behind Every Trial.
EXODUS 14:4 Thus I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will chase after them; and I will be honored through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.” And they did so. 5 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his servants had a change of heart toward the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?
God allowed Pharaoh's heart to harden once more. Pharaoh pursued Israel because God intended to display His glory and reveal His power.
Even difficult situations serve God's greater purposes. He is always working for His glory and for the good of His people.
7. Faith Is Tested Before It Triumphs.
EXODUS 14:9 Then the Egyptians chased after them with all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen and his army, and they overtook them camping by the sea, beside Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon. 10 As Pharaoh drew near, the sons of Israel looked, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they became very frightened; so the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord. 11 Then they said to Moses, “Is it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you dealt with us in this way, bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Is this not the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”
When the Egyptians approached, Israel panicked. Trapped between Pharaoh's army and the Red Sea, they quickly forgot God's miracles and began complaining.
They even preferred slavery in Egypt to uncertainty in freedom.
This reflects a common spiritual struggle. Many believers are tempted to return to old habits, old sins, and old securities because walking by faith can be frightening. The enemy continually seeks to draw God's people back into bondage.
8. Resting While God Fights for Us.
EXODUS 14:13 But Moses said to the people, “Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the Lord which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again forever. 14 The Lord will fight for you while you keep silent.”
The command to "stand by" echoes the principle of Psalm 37:7. God's people are called to stop panicking and focus on Him instead of their circumstances.
When we know God's character, fear loses its power. Rather than complaining and questioning God, we can rest in His promises.
9. Faith Requires Obedient Action.
EXODUS 14:15 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the sons of Israel to go forward... 16 As for you, lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, and the sons of Israel shall go through the midst of the sea on dry land... 22 The sons of Israel went through the midst of the sea on the dry land, and the waters were like a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.
Although Israel was told to rest in God's salvation, they were not told to remain inactive. God commanded them to move forward. Moses stretched out his staff, the sea parted, and the people crossed on dry ground.
Resting in God does not mean doing nothing. It means trusting Him enough to obey His instructions.
HEBREWS 11:29 By faith they passed through the Red Sea as though they were passing through dry land; and the Egyptians, when they attempted it, were drowned...
The crossing of the Red Sea was an act of faith. God's power accomplished the miracle, but the people still had to walk through the path He provided.
Faith trusts God's promises and acts upon them.
10. God's Salvation Becomes a Witness to the World.
EXODUS 14:31 When Israel saw the great power which the Lord had used against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in His servant Moses.
After witnessing God's power, Israel feared the Lord and believed Him.
The miracle strengthened the faith of God's people, but it also impacted others.
JOSHUA 2:10 For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before… 11 …our hearts melted and no courage remained in any man any longer… for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.
Forty years later, the inhabitants of Canaan still remembered the crossing of the Red Sea. News of God's power had spread throughout the land, causing hearts to melt in fear and leading some, like Rahab, to believe in Him.
God used Israel's deliverance as a testimony to the nations. What began as a rescue became an act of evangelism.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for speaking to us through Your Word. Thank You for reminding us that You are a faithful God who keeps every promise. Just as You delivered Israel from bondage, guided them through the wilderness, and brought them safely through the Red Sea, we know that You are able to lead us through every challenge we face.
Lord, help us to rest in You and not be controlled by fear, anxiety, or impatience. Teach us to trust You when the path seems unclear and when circumstances do not make sense. Give us hearts that are willing to follow You in faith, knowing that Your ways are always higher and better than our own.
Fill us with Your Holy Spirit and guide us through Your Word each day. Help us to remember that You are with us in the daytime and in the night, in seasons of blessing and in seasons of difficulty. Strengthen us to move forward in obedience and to trust that You are fighting our battles.
May our lives become a testimony of Your goodness and faithfulness, so that others may come to know that You alone are God.
We give You all the glory, honor, and praise.
In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray,
Amen.
