The Eighth Commandment is often understood simply as a command against theft, but God's command reaches much deeper. Stealing is not only taking what belongs to someone else; it is also withholding what ought to be given. We steal whenever we misuse what God has entrusted to us or fail to fulfill our responsibilities toward Him and others.

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We acknowledge that You are the Owner of all things, and everything we have is a gift from You. Forgive us for the times we have failed to be faithful stewards of our time, talents, possessions, and opportunities.

Open our hearts to understand that we are not owners but stewards entrusted with Your resources. Teach us to honor You in the way we live, work, and serve, so that our lives may bring glory to Your name and be a blessing to others.

May Your Holy Spirit transform our hearts and help us become faithful servants who will one day hear, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

God Owns Everything

EXODUS 20:15 “You shall not steal.

God forbids stealing because He establishes what belongs to whom. Whenever we take what is not ours or withhold what should be given, we violate His holy standard.

PSALMS 24:1 The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains, The world, and those who dwell in it.

Everything belongs to the Lord. Since God owns everything, we are not owners but stewards. Every possession, every opportunity, every skill, every minute of our lives has been entrusted to us by Him.

This means stewardship is much broader than money. God has entrusted us with our possessions, our time, and our talents. The way we manage these gifts reveals whether we recognize His ownership.

More importantly, our stewardship always affects other people. The way we work either blesses others or deprives them of the good God intended through us.

Our Work Is Worship

COLOSSIANS 3:23 Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.

Since God is the Owner, our work is ultimately done for Him. Whether our task is great or small, visible or unnoticed, every act of faithful work becomes an act of worship.

Working wholeheartedly glorifies God and blesses people. On the other hand, when we become careless, dishonest, lazy, or indifferent, we rob God of the honor He deserves and rob others of the blessings our faithful work could have provided.

Our work ethic therefore reflects our worship.

1 PETER 2:18 Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are unreasonable.

This command is to demonstrate reverence for God by giving respect and submission to one's master, no matter how fair and kind or harsh and unreasonable he may be. Those who are truly free aren't dependent on any human authority to determine their actions or attitudes. We submit to human authority for the Lord's sake and, as Jesus did, trust our Father to provide for us.

The Perfect Example

JOHN 17:4 I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do.

Jesus perfectly fulfilled the work His Father entrusted to Him. Before the cross, He had faithfully discipled His followers and completed every assignment the Father had given Him up to that point.

JOHN 6:38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 39 This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day.

Everything Jesus did was motivated by obedience to His Father. He never pursued His own agenda but faithfully fulfilled the Father's mission.

JOHN19:30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

On the cross Jesus completed the greatest work ever accomplished. His declaration means "Paid in full." Through His finished work, the penalty for our sins was completely satisfied.

Because Jesus faithfully completed His mission, all who trust in Him receive forgiveness and eternal life.

As His followers, we are now called to continue His mission. Since everything belongs to God, let us faithfully steward our time, talents, opportunities, and lives.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for reminding us that everything we have belongs to You. Our lives, our time, our talents, and our possessions are gifts You have entrusted to us. Forgive us for the times we have been careless, selfish, or unfaithful in our stewardship.

Help us to work wholeheartedly as unto You, to serve with integrity, diligence, and love, and to use every opportunity for Your glory and the good of others. May our lives reflect the character of Jesus, who faithfully accomplished the work You gave Him to do.

By the power of Your Holy Spirit, enable us to be faithful stewards until the day we stand before You. May we live in such a way that we will one day hear, "Well done, good and faithful servant."
