Many people become so busy with the traditions, gifts, food, decorations, and gatherings of Christmas that they forget the true reason for the celebration — Jesus Christ. Christmas is not mainly about the event itself, but about God coming into the world to save sinners. Jesus, the eternal God and Creator, became human because He loves us and wants to give us eternal life.

The problem is not the celebration, but when the celebration replaces Christ as the center. Many celebrate Christmas every year yet never truly receive Jesus. The true meaning of Christmas is God’s love, salvation, forgiveness, and hope through Christ. Christmas only has its real meaning when we remember why Jesus came.

PRAYER.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of Christmas and for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, into the world. Thank You that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us so that we could know Your love, grace, and salvation.

Forgive us when we become so busy with the traditions and celebrations that we forget that Jesus is the true reason for Christmas. Help us keep Christ at the center of our hearts and lives. Open our eyes to remember why He came — to save us from sin and give us eternal life.

Lord, teach us not only to celebrate Christmas outwardly, but to truly receive Jesus inwardly. Fill our hearts with gratitude, peace, hope, and joy that come from knowing You. May our lives reflect Your love and may we share the good news of Christ with others.

Thank You for Your forgiveness and for the eternal life You freely give through Jesus. May this Christmas draw us closer to You and remind us always of Your great love for us.

In Jesus’ name we pray,

Amen.

JOHN 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Gospel of John begins by revealing the heart of Christmas: God did not remain distant from humanity. The eternal Word became human and lived among us so people could personally know God’s grace and truth. Christmas is not mainly about traditions, decorations, or even the exact date of Jesus’ birth. It is the celebration of God coming near to rescue mankind.

JOHN 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

Before Jesus came into the world as a baby, He already existed eternally with God and as God Himself. These verses establish that Jesus is not merely a teacher or prophet but the Creator of all things. The One born in Bethlehem is the same One who made heaven and earth. Christmas therefore reminds us that the Creator entered His own creation.

HEBREWS 1:8 But of the Son He says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, And the righteous scepter is the scepter of His kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness above Your companions.” 10 And, “You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the works of Your hands; 11 They will perish, but You remain; And they all will become old like a garment, 12 And like a mantle You will roll them up; Like a garment they will also be change…

Epistle to the Hebrews further confirms the divine nature of Christ. God the Father speaks to the Son as eternal Lord and Creator. While creation changes and passes away, Jesus remains forever unchanged. These verses show the majesty of Christ and reveal the unity of the triune God in the work of creation and redemption.

COLOSSIANS 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation: 16 for by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, or dominions, or rulers, or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.

Epistle to the Colossians explains that Jesus perfectly reveals the invisible God. Everything exists through Him and for Him. This means life only finds its true meaning when centered on Christ. Christmas points us back to the One for whom all creation was made.

PHILIPPIANS 2:7 but emptied Himself by taking the form of a bond-servant and being born in the likeness of men.

Epistle to the Philippians shows the humility of Jesus. Though He is God, He willingly took the form of a servant and entered human life. His coming was an act of sacrificial love. He lowered Himself so that sinners could be lifted up to God.

JOHN 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

The reason for Christ’s coming is God’s love for the world. God gave His Son so people would not perish but receive eternal life through faith in Him. Christmas is the announcement that salvation is offered freely because of God’s love, not because humanity deserved it.

JOHN 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.

Even though Jesus created the world, many failed to recognize or receive Him. These verses reveal the tragedy of human unbelief. God came near, yet people rejected Him. Christmas therefore confronts every person with a choice: to receive Christ or turn away from Him.

JOHN 1:4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. 5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

Jesus is described as the source of life and the light that shines in darkness. Humanity lives in spiritual darkness apart from Him, unable to fully understand truth and life. Christ came to overcome that darkness and bring people into the light of God.

MATTHEW 25:30 Throw out the worthless slave into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Gospel of Matthew warns about the reality of final separation from God. Outer darkness represents judgment and eternal loss. Jesus spoke about this not to frighten people unnecessarily, but to reveal the seriousness of rejecting God.

MATTHEW 13:41 The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, 42 and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Jesus teaches that evil and lawlessness will ultimately be judged. God is holy and righteous, and sin cannot remain forever unpunished. Christmas matters because Christ came to save people from this coming judgment.

ROMANS 6:23 For the wages of sin is death…

Epistle to the Romans explains humanity’s condition clearly: sin earns death. Yet God offers eternal life as a gift through Jesus Christ. The coming of Christ is God’s answer to humanity’s deepest problem.

LUKE 26:22 Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and *saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.’

Gospel of Luke describes the reality that death is not the end. Jesus teaches that eternal destinies are fixed after death. The rich man’s torment and Lazarus’ comfort show the seriousness of responding to God while there is still opportunity. Christ came because humanity could not save itself from eternal separation from God.

REVELATION 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Book of Revelation reveals the final judgment where every person stands before God. Hades itself will be cast into the lake of fire, showing that present death and judgment are temporary before the final eternal judgment. Only those whose names are written in the book of life are spared. Christmas points forward to this eternal reality and God’s provision of salvation through Christ.

REVELATION 21:8 But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

This passage emphasizes that sin leads to the second death. God’s judgment is perfectly just. Christmas is meaningful because Jesus came to rescue sinners from this eternal consequence.

ROMANS 6:23 …but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

When Jesus Christ came on the first Christmas, God was offering the greatest gift mankind could ever receive — eternal life through His Son. Jesus came to bring hope, salvation, forgiveness, and reconciliation with God to all who would believe in Him. The gift of salvation cannot be earned by human effort; it is freely given by God through Jesus Christ. Christmas reminds us that God lovingly reached out to humanity by sending His Son so that we would not perish, but have eternal life.

ROMANS 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Those who belong to Christ are no longer condemned. Jesus took upon Himself the penalty of sin so believers could be declared righteous before God. Christmas is the beginning of the salvation story that leads to the cross and resurrection.

ROMANS 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned— 18 So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men

Sin entered the world through Adam, bringing death to all humanity. But through Jesus Christ came the opportunity for justification and life. Christ came as the second Adam to reverse the curse brought by the first man’s sin.

MATTHEW 1:23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”

Jesus is called Immanuel, meaning “God with us.” God did not merely send a message; He personally came near to His people. The true blessing and success in life is not earthly wealth or status but the presence of God with us.

ISAIAH 9:6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Book of Isaiah presents the coming Messiah as Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, and Prince of Peace. Jesus fully understands human struggles because He entered human life Himself. He alone can bring true peace and guidance.

ROMANS 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?

If God willingly gave His own Son for humanity, believers can trust His love and care completely. Christmas assures us that God is for us, because the greatest proof of His love has already been given in Christ.

JOHN 10:10 …I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

Jesus came not merely to give existence, but abundant life. This overflowing life includes peace with God, purpose, hope, and eternal security. The life Christ gives is meant to overflow into the lives of others.

LUKE 2:17 When they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds.

After the shepherds encountered Jesus, they shared the good news with others. Genuine understanding of Christ naturally leads to proclaiming Him. Christmas is not meant to be kept private but shared joyfully.

2 KINGS 7:8 When these lepers came to the outskirts of the camp, they entered one tent and ate and drank, and carried from there silver and gold and clothes, and went and hid them; and they returned and entered another tent, and carried valuables from there also, and went and hid them. 9 Then they said to one another, “We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news, but we are keeping silent; if we wait until morning light, punishment will overtake us. Now therefore come, let us go and tell the king’s household.”

Second Book of Kings illustrates the responsibility of those who discover good news. The lepers realized it was wrong to keep silent while others remained in need. In the same way, believers are called to share the message of salvation through Christ.

JOHN 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

Those who receive Jesus by faith are given the right to become children of God. Salvation is not achieved by human effort or heritage but by God’s work of grace. Christmas invites every person to receive Christ and enter into a relationship with God.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for reminding us of the true meaning of Christmas. Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to bring us hope, salvation, forgiveness, and eternal life. Thank You for Your great love that reached down to us even while we were lost in sin and darkness.

Lord, help us not to be distracted only by the celebrations and traditions, but to keep Christ at the center of our hearts and lives. Teach us to truly receive Jesus and to live each day with gratitude for the gift of salvation You freely gave through Him.

Help us also to share this good news with others, just as the shepherds joyfully proclaimed what they had seen and heard. May our lives reflect Your love, grace, and truth so that others may come to know You as well.

Thank You for being Immanuel, God with us. May we continue to walk in Your light, peace, and abundant life.

In Jesus’ name we pray,

Amen.
