Under the Authority of Jesus Christ

And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth."

MATTHEW 28:18

2 CORINTHIANS 5:9 Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him.

The highest ambition of a Christian life is not personal comfort, recognition, or success, but to be pleasing to God. True spiritual maturity is seen when our desires become aligned with His will. God is not merely interested in making our lives easier; He is shaping our character to reflect Christ. Like a soldier saluting a commanding officer, obedience to God is an acknowledgment of His rightful authority over our lives. To live for His pleasure means surrendering our plans, attitudes, and priorities to Him daily.

2 TIMOTHY 2:4 No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier.

The Christian life is like a soldier in active service. A faithful soldier does not allow distractions to interfere with loyalty to the one who enlisted him. Likewise, believers are called to live with spiritual focus and devotion to Christ. The affairs of this world can easily entangle our hearts, but our ultimate calling is to honor and obey the Lord Jesus Christ. Our lives are not our own anymore; we belong to the One who saved and enlisted us into His service.

MATTHEW 8:8 But the centurion said, “Lord, I am not worthy for You to come under my roof, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.

The centurion recognized something profound about Jesus: authority flows from position and power. Because the centurion himself operated under authority, he understood that Jesus did not need to be physically present to heal. Christ’s word alone carried absolute power. This reveals the kind of faith believers should have in Jesus Christ. He is not merely a teacher or prophet; He is the sovereign Lord whose authority extends over sickness, circumstances, and all creation. The Lord entrusts His work to us, but His authority remains the power behind everything we do.

MATTHEW 28:16 But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful. 18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

Even after witnessing Jesus’ resurrection, some disciples still struggled with doubt. This passage honestly reveals both the weakness and worship found in human hearts. Yet despite their imperfections, Jesus entrusted them with His mission. The foundation of the Great Commission is His declaration that all authority in heaven and on earth belongs to Him. The success of God’s work does not depend on perfect people, but on the perfect authority of Christ who sends them.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for reminding us that our greatest ambition should be to please You. Teach us to surrender our plans, desires, and priorities to Your will each day. Help us to live with faithful devotion, like soldiers under the authority of our Commander, Jesus Christ.

Lord, strengthen our faith to trust in Your power and authority over every circumstance in our lives. Even when we struggle with weakness and doubt, help us to follow and obey You wholeheartedly.

Thank You, Jesus, for leading us, using us, and never leaving us alone in the work You have called us to do. May our lives always honor and glorify You.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

JESUS CHRIST’S CREDENTIALS

I. HIS AUTHORITY

a. Authority in Teaching.

MATTHEW 7:28 When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; 29 for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.

The crowds immediately recognized that Jesus taught differently from the scribes. His words carried divine certainty, truth, and power because He Himself is the living Word of God. Human opinions may inspire temporarily, but the teaching of Christ transforms hearts because it comes with heavenly authority. His truth does not depend on human approval; it stands eternally because it originates from God Himself.

b. Authority Over Nature.

MATTHEW 8:23 When He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being covered with the waves; but Jesus Himself was asleep. 25 And they came to Him and woke Him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing!” 26 He *said to them, “Why are you afraid, you men of little faith?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it became perfectly calm. 27 The men were amazed, and said, “What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”

While the disciples panicked during the violent storm, Jesus remained completely at peace. His calmness revealed His complete authority over creation itself. With a single command, the winds and sea obeyed Him instantly. This passage reminds believers that no storm is greater than Christ. The same Lord who rules the universe also rules over the overwhelming situations in our lives. The question is not whether nature obeys Him — it already does. The question is whether we will trust and obey Him ourselves.

c. Authority to Forgive Sins.

MATTHEW 9:4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, “Why are you thinking evil in your hearts? 5 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, and walk’? 6 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—then He *said to the paralytic, “Get up, pick up your bed and go home.” 7 And he got up and went home. 8 But when the crowds saw this, they were awestruck, and glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

Jesus demonstrated His divine authority by addressing both the spiritual and physical needs of the paralytic. He knew the hidden thoughts and wrong attitudes in the hearts of those around Him, yet He still extended grace and healing. Only God has the authority to forgive sins, and Jesus openly exercised that authority. This passage reveals both His divine identity and His deep mercy toward sinful people. He sees every failure, wrong motive, and judgmental thought within us, yet still offers forgiveness and restoration.

d. Authority Over the Spirit World.

MARK 1:23 Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, 24 saying, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” 25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” 26 Throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him. 27 They were all amazed, so that they debated among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”

The unclean spirit immediately recognized who Jesus was and could not resist His command. Deliverance came not through human ability, emotional intensity, or religious formulas, but through the authority of Jesus Christ alone. His name carries absolute power over the spiritual realm. This passage reminds believers that victory over darkness is found only in Christ, not in human strength or methods.

II. HIS HEART.

a. Compassion for the Lost.

MATTHEW 9:36 Seeing the people, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then He *said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”

When Jesus looked at the crowds, He did not see interruptions or burdens; He saw people who were weary, helpless, and spiritually lost. His compassion moved Him to call for workers to reach them. Christ desires His followers to see people through His eyes — not with judgment or indifference, but with mercy and love. The harvest remains plentiful because many people are still searching for hope, truth, and salvation.

b. Compassion for Spiritual Blindness.

MATTHEW 20:32 And Jesus stopped and called them, and said, “What do you want Me to do for you?” 33 They *said to Him, “Lord, we want our eyes to be opened.” 34 Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes; and immediately they regained their sight and followed Him.

Jesus stopped for the blind men and listened to their cry. His compassion moved Him to restore their sight, both physically and spiritually. This passage reflects Christ’s concern for people whose eyes remain closed to His truth, grace, and love. Many today still need their spiritual eyes opened so they can truly see who Jesus is.

c. Compassion in Sorrow.

JOHN 11:35 Jesus wept.

The shortest verse in Scripture reveals one of the deepest truths about Jesus: He enters into human pain. Though He knew He would raise Lazarus, Jesus still wept with those who were grieving. His tears reveal that God is not distant from suffering. Christ walks with people through their darkest moments and shares in their sorrow.

d. Compassion That Gives Life.

LUKE 7:12 Now as He approached the gate of the city, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a sizeable crowd from the city was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, He felt compassion for her, and said to her, “Do not weep.” 14 And He came up and touched the coffin; and the bearers came to a halt. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise!”

Jesus understood the desperate condition of the widow who had lost her only son. In that society, she was left vulnerable, helpless, and without support. Christ’s compassion moved Him to intervene and bring life where there was death. In the same way, Jesus brings spiritual life to hopeless and broken people today. His compassion is not passive sympathy; it is active mercy that restores and renews.

e. The Good Shepherd

JOHN 10:11 “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.

Jesus revealed the depth of His love by willingly laying down His life for His sheep. Unlike a hired servant who abandons the flock, Christ sacrifices Himself to save and protect His people. He took our place so we could receive forgiveness, freedom, and eternal life. His love is personal, sacrificial, and complete.

III. HIS SACRIFICE.

a. A Servant Motivated by Love.

DEUTERONOMY:16 It shall come about if he says to you, ‘I will not go out from you,’ because he loves you and your household, since he fares well with you; 17 then you shall take an awl and pierce it through his ear into the door, and he shall be your servant forever…

This Old Testament picture illustrates a servant who willingly chooses lifelong service because he loves his master. This reflects the response believers should have toward Jesus Christ. The Lord purchased us from slavery to sin, not to oppress us, but to set us free. Serving Him is not forced bondage; it is a loving surrender to the One who has been perfectly good and faithful to us.

b. Christ Our Foundation

1 CORINTHIANS 3:11 For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Every lasting spiritual life must be built upon Jesus Christ alone. Human achievements, traditions, and personal strength cannot sustain us eternally. Christ is the only secure foundation for faith, purpose, and salvation. When our lives are grounded in Him, He directs us to walk together in unity and obedience according to His will.

c. The Great Commission

MATTHEW 28:18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Because all authority belongs to Jesus Christ, He commands His followers to go and make disciples of all nations. The mission is not merely to gain converts, but to teach people to obey everything He commanded. Yet alongside this great responsibility comes a great promise: Christ Himself will remain with His people always. Believers are never left alone in the work God has called them to do. The presence, authority, and power of Jesus continue to sustain His church until the end of the age.

PRAYER

Help us to walk in faithful obedience, trusting in Your authority over every area of our lives. Teach us to follow You with humble and surrendered hearts, free from the distractions of this world. Strengthen our faith so that we may serve You faithfully, even in times of weakness, fear, or doubt.

Lord Jesus, thank You for Your compassion, Your sacrifice, and Your constant presence with us. Continue to guide us and use us for Your glory as we live under Your authority each day.

Amen.
