The workplace is very important. It is part of God’s design to transform us, shape our character, and make us a blessing to others. Through the marketplace and the workplace, God not only provides for our needs but also uses us to reflect His presence, serve others, and become channels of His blessing.
PRAYER.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of work and for the workplace where You shape our character and teach us to walk by faith. Help us to see our work not merely as a responsibility, but as a calling from You. Transform our hearts so that we may honor You with integrity, diligence, humility, and excellence in all that we do.
Lord, make us a blessing to the people around us. Use our lives to reflect Your presence in the marketplace and workplace. Teach us to serve others with love, wisdom, and grace, and let our attitude and actions point people to You.
Strengthen us when we face discouragement, temptation, pressure, or injustice. Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and remind us that true success is found in doing Your will faithfully. May Your presence be the source of our peace, strength, and confidence every day.
Thank You that You never leave us nor forsake us. Use our work for Your glory and make our lives channels of Your blessing.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
GENESIS 39
1 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the bodyguard, bought him from the Ishmaelites, who had taken him down there.
Joseph entered a season he never planned. He went from being honored in his father’s house to becoming a slave in Egypt. God often works in places we would never choose for ourselves. The workplace, even difficult or painful environments, can become part of God’s training ground for character, humility, dependence, and faithfulness. Discouragement becomes dangerous when we focus only on our losses and forget that God is still writing our story.
HEBREWS 12:2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Endurance comes from fixing our eyes on Jesus, not on circumstances or people. Human beings will disappoint us because no one is perfect, but Jesus sees the complete picture of our lives. He endured suffering because He knew the joy and victory that would come afterward. In the same way, believers can endure hardships in work and life because God is shaping them for eternal purposes. The Lord is not only concerned about our comfort but also about our transformation.
GENESIS 39:2 The Lord was with Joseph, so he became a successful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian. 3 Now his master saw that the Lord was with him and how the Lord caused all that he did to prosper in his hand. 4 So Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal servant; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he owned he put in his charge.
Joseph’s success came from the presence of God, not from position, wealth, or freedom. Even as a slave, he prospered because he honored God through faithful service. Potiphar recognized that something was different about Joseph’s life. God’s presence produced excellence, integrity, and wisdom in his work. This passage teaches that true success is fulfilling God’s purpose wherever He places us. The workplace becomes a testimony when people see God’s character reflected through our attitudes, diligence, and faithfulness.
COLOSSIANS 3:22 Slaves, in all things obey those who are your masters on earth, not with external service, as those who merely please men, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men,
Work is ultimately done for the Lord. Whether a task seems important or ordinary, it becomes sacred when offered to God. Christian work is not based merely on pleasing people or gaining recognition but on honoring Christ. Excellence in work is an act of worship because it reflects reverence for God. When our focus is the Lord rather than human approval, we develop sincerity, diligence, and consistency.
GENESIS 39:5 It came about that from the time he made him overseer in his house and over all that he owned, the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house on account of Joseph; thus the Lord’s blessing was upon all that he owned, in the house and in the field. 6 So he left everything he owned in Joseph’s charge; and with him there he did not concern himself with anything except the food which he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance. 7 It came about after these events that his master’s wife looked with desire at Joseph, and she said, “Lie with me.”
God blessed Potiphar’s household because of Joseph’s faithfulness. The Lord desires His people to become channels of blessing to others. Through integrity and excellent work, Joseph brought benefit to everyone around him. Yet this passage also shows that success often attracts temptation. As Joseph gained influence and favor, he faced a serious moral test. Spiritual growth does not remove temptation; sometimes greater responsibility brings greater testing.
GENESIS 39:8 But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, with me here, my master does not concern himself with anything in the house, and he has put all that he owns in my charge. 9 There is no one greater in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this great evil and sin against God?”
Joseph resisted temptation because he understood accountability before God. He respected his master’s trust and recognized that sin is ultimately against the Lord. His refusal was rooted not merely in fear of consequences but in reverence for God’s holiness. This passage reveals that intimacy with God produces strength to resist sin. The greatest safeguard against temptation is not self-confidence but awareness of God’s presence and grace.
GENESIS 39:10 As she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her to lie beside her or be with her. 11 Now it happened one day that he went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the household was there inside. 12 She caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” And he left his garment in her hand and fled, and went outside.
Temptation became persistent and aggressive, yet Joseph continually refused. Eventually he chose to flee rather than remain in a compromising situation. Wisdom sometimes means physically removing ourselves from temptation instead of trying to prove our strength. Victory over sin often requires immediate obedience and dependence on God’s grace. Joseph valued purity more than reputation, comfort, or position.
GENESIS 39:17 Then she spoke to him with these words, “The Hebrew slave, whom you brought to us, came in to me to make sport of me; 18 and as I raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled outside.” 19 Now when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, “This is what your slave did to me,” his anger burned. 20 So Joseph’s master took him and put him into the jail, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined; and he was there in the jail.
Joseph suffered injustice despite doing what was right. False accusations led him from slavery into prison. Following God does not guarantee an easy life or protection from unfair treatment. Yet this passage teaches that faithfulness to God is more important than temporary vindication. During painful situations, believers must resist turning away from the Lord because hardship often becomes the very place where God deepens faith and dependence on Him.
1 PETER 2:18 Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are unreasonable. 19 For this finds favor, if for the sake of conscience toward God a person bears up under sorrows when suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God.
Enduring unjust suffering with faith pleases God. The world is often unfair, and believers may experience mistreatment even when they act rightly. Christian endurance is not passive weakness but active trust in God’s justice. Instead of seeking revenge or giving in to bitterness, believers are called to entrust themselves to the Lord, the righteous Judge who sees every injustice perfectly.

GENESIS 39:21 But the Lord was with Joseph and extended kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the chief jailer. 22 The chief jailer committed to Joseph’s charge all the prisoners who were in the jail; so that whatever was done there, he was responsible for it. 23 The chief jailer did not supervise anything under Joseph’s charge because the Lord was with him; and whatever he did, the Lord made to prosper.
Even inside the prison, God remained with Joseph. His circumstances changed, but God’s presence did not. The Lord gave Joseph favor, responsibility, and influence once again because Joseph continued to be faithful. This passage teaches that true blessing is not tied to location, comfort, or status. Real blessing is the presence and favor of God. A faithful person can prosper spiritually even in difficult environments because God Himself is the source of success.
JOHN 6:37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out.
Human beings may reject, abandon, or misunderstand us, but Christ never casts away those who seek Him. In seasons of discouragement, temptation, injustice, or failure, believers can come confidently to Jesus knowing that He receives them with grace. Our security is not found in people or circumstances but in the unchanging faithfulness of Christ.
PRAYER.
