When we think about the Ten Commandments, we should think about one word—love. God gave His commandments because He loves us and desires what is best for us. Likewise, when we obey His commands, we demonstrate our love for Him and our love for others. The Ninth Commandment teaches us that genuine love cannot exist apart from truth.

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We praise You because You are a God of truth, holiness, and unfailing love. Thank You for giving us Your Word and Your commandments, not to burden us, but to guide us into a life that honors You and blesses others. Thank You that every command You give is an expression of Your love and wisdom.

Open our hearts and minds to understand Your truth. Search us and reveal any deceit, hypocrisy, or dishonesty within us. Give us humble hearts that are willing to confess our sins and receive Your forgiveness.

Lord, teach us to love the truth because You are the God of truth. Help us to speak the truth in love, to build others up rather than tear them down, and to live with integrity in our words, our actions, and even our thoughts. Guard our lips from falsehood, and let our lives reflect the character of Jesus Christ.

May Your Holy Spirit transform us from the inside out, so that our hearts, our mouths, and our lives bring glory to You. May this study strengthen our love for You and deepen our love for one another.

We ask all these things in the precious name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

I. God Commands Us to Live Truthfully

EXODUS 20:16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”

Lying has become so common that many people consider it normal. Society often accepts "little white lies," exaggerations, deception, and half-truths. Yet God's standard has never changed.

As someone wisely said:

• Nothing weakens the truth more than stretching it.

• When we choose to lie, we choose to suffer.

• The truth may hurt for a little while, but a lie may hurt forever.

• If we hold on to God's truth, we won't be trapped by Satan's lies.

Sir Walter Scott famously wrote, "Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive."

Truthfulness is a Christian virtue that must be cultivated. God calls His people to be different from the world.

JEREMIAH 17:9 “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked…

People lie because the real problem is not the tongue—it is the heart. Our sinful hearts naturally deceive ourselves and others. We often lie because we fear rejection, embarrassment, punishment, or losing something important.

God exposes the true source of dishonesty: a sinful heart that does not fully trust Him.

II. God Takes Lying Seriously

PROVERBS 19:5 A false witness will not go unpunished, And he who tells lies will not escape.

God never treats lying as a small matter. A lie is any intentional attempt to deceive. It may be spoken, written, acted out, or even communicated through silence. Sometimes we lie by withholding the truth when we have a responsibility to speak. Even a "half-truth" is a whole lie because it intentionally creates a false impression.

Since lying always damages relationships, God warns that deception brings consequences. Yet God also offers hope.

PROVERBS 28:13 He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, But he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion.

Instead of hiding our sins through more deception, God invites us to confess them. Confession leads to mercy; concealment leads to bondage.

III. Truth Must Always Be Spoken in Love

EPHESIANS 4:15 …speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.

Truth alone can become harsh. Love alone can become compromise. God calls us to combine both.

Speaking the truth in love means our goal is restoration, not condemnation. Before confronting someone, we should first build the relationship. Encourage people as much as you correct them. Let them know they are loved even while you speak difficult truths.

Truth spoken in love strengthens the body of Christ and produces spiritual maturity. Speaking honestly also demonstrates trust in God. We tell the truth because we desire God's approval more than people's approval.

IV. Living a Lie Contradicts Our Fellowship with God

1 JOHN 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth;

Christianity is not merely believing the truth; it is practicing the truth. Our profession must match our conduct. A life of continual deception reveals inconsistency between our confession and our walk. God desires integrity—truth on the inside as well as on the outside.

PROVERBS 6:16 There are six things which the Lord hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: 17 …a lying tongue... 19 A false witness who utters lies

The six sins listed are:

1. Haughty eyes – Pride, arrogance, and looking down on others.

2. A lying tongue – Dishonesty, deception, and speaking falsehood.

3. Hands that shed innocent blood – Murder or harming innocent people.

4. A heart that devises wicked plans – Intentionally plotting evil or sinful schemes.

5. Feet that run rapidly to evil – Eagerness or readiness to commit sin.

6. A false witness who declares lies – Giving false testimony or slandering another person.

Among the seven sins listed, lying appears twice. That repetition emphasizes how seriously God views deception. Because Satan is the father of lies.. Every lie reflects his character rather than God's. Whenever we lie, we distance ourselves from God's truth and align ourselves with the enemy's methods.

God desires His children to reflect His character instead.

The seventh item is the culmination of the six sins. Pride, deceit, violence, evil plotting, readiness to commit sin, and false testimony all destroy fellowship and create conflict.

V. God Gives Us Power to Break the Habit of Lying

Dishonesty is often a habit. The good news is that habits can be broken. Whenever God commands something, He also provides the grace and power to obey. We cannot overcome sinful speech through willpower alone. We need the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit.

PSALM 141:3 Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips.

David recognized that only God could control his speech.

PROVERBS 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

Words build or destroy. Today this includes more than spoken words. Emails, text messages, social media posts, blogs, comments, and online conversations all reveal our hearts. Words can destroy marriages, friendships, reputations, careers, and churches.

But words can also encourage, comfort, reconcile, strengthen faith, and proclaim the gospel. Every day we choose whether our words will produce life or death.

JAMES 3:8 But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.

Human effort is insufficient. We cannot permanently control our speech by self-discipline alone. The God who created the tongue is the only One who can truly tame it. Therefore, we must depend daily upon His Spirit.

PROVERBS 13:3 The one who guards his mouth preserves his life; The one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.

Guarding our speech is evidence of spiritual wisdom. When we trust Christ, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us. The deepest transformation is not external—it is internal.

LUKE 6:45 …out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good…

Our words simply reveal what already fills our hearts.

• A harsh tongue often reveals an angry heart.

• A negative tongue often reveals a fearful heart.

• A boastful tongue often reveals an insecure heart.

• A dishonest tongue reveals a deceitful heart.

Lying always begins in the heart before it reaches the lips.

EZEKIEL 18:31 Put all your rebellion behind you, and find yourselves a new heart and a new spirit…

God promises inner transformation. Ultimately, this promise is fulfilled in Christ.

2 CORINTHIANS 5:17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

When we surrender our lives to Jesus Christ, He forgives our sins, removes our guilt, and gives us a new heart, a new spirit, and a new beginning.

The Christian life is not merely trying harder to tell the truth—it is living from a transformed heart.

VI. Guard Your Heart Daily

Because the heart is the source of our words, it must be continually surrendered to God.

PSALM 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God…

Only God could purify the heart.

PROVERBS 4:23 Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

Everything flows from the heart—including our speech. If our hearts belong to Christ, our words will increasingly reflect His truth, grace, and love.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your Word and for reminding us that You are the God of truth. Forgive us for the times we have failed in our words, attitudes, and actions. Create in us a clean heart and renew a right spirit within us.

Help us to speak the truth in love, to live with honesty and integrity, and to seek Your approval above all else. Set a guard over our mouths, and let our words bring life, encouragement, and glory to Your name.

May our lives reflect the character of Jesus, and may the Holy Spirit empower us to walk in truth each day.
